Lenovo Thinkpad 8 20BN000UGE Remove Bitlocker / Reinstall Windows 10

After a long time got a chance to fix one windows tablet and it was Lenovo ThinkPad 8 20BN000UGE. The user forgot the login password and the reset was also not working as storage was protected with BitLocker. After multiple failed attempts managed to wipe the storage and reinstalled windows 10. In this tutorial, I will share a complete guide that how you can do it.

Requirements:

  1. Micro USB OTG connector
  2. USB Hub with at least 3 USB ports
  3. USB drive with 8GB storage to make Windows bootable
  4. USB Mouse
  5. USB keyboard
  6. The battery should be charged in full

Make windows Bootable USB:

Make sure you download the X86 Windows 10 image and make a GPT bootable disk for UEFI type. Rufus is easy to use tool that I have used to make a bootable USB Drive.

Enter Recovery Mode:

You will have to enter recovery mode or startup settings in order to make any changes. steps to enter recovery mode is very simple. just hold the power button repeatedly press the volume down button, and keep pressing until you see startup settings. here you need to tap on setup and the tablet will take you to bios settings there you need to turn off the secure boot option.

On the next screen, you select language, etc, and then you tap on troubleshoot.

On the next screen, you tap on Advanced options

and then you need to tap on Command Prompt

The CMD screen will open and now magic will start, we will use diskpart tool to wipe the storage. This action will remove all data on your internal storage.

Type

DISKPART

and press enter

Then type

List Volume

and press enter

Disk 0 is your internal storage, so we will type

select disk 0

and press enter

now type

create partition primary

and press enter

then type

format fs=ntfs

and press enter, now the wiping process will start and it will take some time to complete, you will be able to see the percentage.

after this step connect the OTG USB connector to the tablet and connect the USB HUB. Then connect a USB mouse, USB keyboard, and Bootable USB. And reboot the tablet to recovery mode as we did in step 1. Now you will be able to see your Bootloader USB drive in the startup options. tap on it and Windows installation should start. Just in case the tablet doesn’t boot to the USB drive, in recovery mode tap on “setup” to enter bios there you have to disable secure boot. Then USB boot will work fine.

During the installation process, windows may show you an error that partition type is not supported please use MBR disk. To fix this issue all you have to do is delete the partition and then continue the Windows installation

If installation asks for the windows key just skip it, windows license is embedded in the tablet bios and it will be activated automatically. Once you are done with windows installation and setup. you need to download drivers and install them.
