few days back faced strange problem while configuring gmail id in outlook, i was unable to login to server.
searched on google but found no solution, but found the clue,
which i am going to share with you in simple 4 steps
1. open your gmail inbox and click on settings icon and click on settings as shown in image below:

2. settings page should open, click on forwarding pop/imap , and enable you desired protocol you want to use in outlook, and save settings. see image below

3. now go to your google account setting by click this link https://accounts.google.com/b/0/ManageAccount
and then change account permissions and enable access for less secure apps, as shown in image below

4. on next page you will see option to disable and enable permission, , select enable and click done,
